A little over two hours later, they were driving on a Dallas freeway, headed for Sam’s house. Everything they passed was familiar, street exits, restaurants, businesses and the familiar skyline of Dallas. Haley felt like she’d been away on a long, long trip, and was finally coming home.

“So, is it weird being back here?” Sam asked, as he maneuvered a lane change.

Haley shook her head. “It just feels...normal.”

“That’s how it feels having you in the seat beside me,” Sam said. “It will be even better waking up in a house with you in it again.”

Haley hesitated, then asked. “Do you still live in our old house?”

He shook his head. “Too many memories. I sold it right after you left. I live in a different area of the city now. Even though it’s nothing like our old house was, I think you’ll like it.”

“I’ll like anything with you in it,” she said. “I wish I knew what was happening with my apartment, like is the power still out? Did any windows break? Everything in the refrigerator will be a disgusting mess.”

“One thing at a time, baby. We’ll deal with it all when it’s safe to return, okay?”

She nodded. “I’ve been trying off and on to reach Rhoda Bates. She’s the secretary from the realty office, and the one I called after I regained consciousness in the house.”

“If she’s had any access to media at all, she’s bound to know what happened to you,” Sam said.

“That’s what I keep telling myself,” Haley said. “She’s really nice, and so is Mr. Truman, who owns the realty company.”

“Will you be afraid to continue in that job?”

“You mean because of being hurt, or the men who broke in?”

“I don’t know, honey,” Sam said. “I would think it’s all one in the same for you right now.”

Haley sighed. “I haven’t thought about it like that, but I do like the job itself, and whatever hang-ups I might have at first will be temporary. Maybe because I don’t feel like a victim.”

“That’s because you fought back, Haley. You didn’t roll over and quit. You kept fighting to live.”

Tears quickened, but Haley blinked them away. “I did, didn’t I?”

“Yes, ma’am, you sure did,” Sam said, and then took the exit to their right. “It’s not far now. We’re almost home.”

Dude Santos was making plans to cross the border back into Texas, but a little uncertain as to where to go. He’d always maintained his stateside headquarters in Houston, but at the moment, that wasn’t possible, and the woman he wanted was in Dallas. It was only logic that led him to begin a search there. He’d been online for two hours, looking for a property to lease in an upscale area of the city, when his phone rang. He glanced at Caller ID and then smiled. Finally, his Dallas contractor was returning his call.

“Buenos dias.”

“Same to you, Dude. It’s been a while. What can I do for you?”

He began outlining what he wanted, and that he would be in the Dallas area within the week.
